Can this be done before I leave from the states?

Yes, I use etopuponline but there are other online services that can also add minutes. Actually I have my etopuponline account setup so it automatically adds $5 worth of minutes every month. Just before the plane starts to descend I swap out my SIM card and just as we hit the tarmac Claro is up and running.

Sorry it was too late to edit prior post. If you mean can you buy a data package before you leave from the states the answer is no. You can add minutes ($ credit) to your account before you leave the states but you can't buy the Claro data package until you have landed in la rep dom and have a Claro signal.

Exactly what I do. :)

So easy now to buy data plans, no more trips to Claro kiosks

Not only that but nowadays just about every cell phone has the ability to work as a Wi-Fi hotspot. I set my phone up as a hotspot and can log onto the internet with my laptop via my cell using the Claro data package.

I am almost positive you can do the same with Orange.

With Claro I punch in *122# (or something like that as I always forget and do trial and error). I go through a couple of menus to select my purchase and a done deal.

I am sure someone on the board who has Orange would know the procedure. Or if no one responds stop at the Orange booth and get the needed info.

A whole lot better than trying to depend on free Wi-Fi at SDQ.

With Xoom, you can top up almost any service from the states.
(If you give me your #, I'll gladly do it for you) Hehehe.

Just as there is a Claro office in SDQ, there is an Orange office as well. The whole process to add pesos to your account, and acquire a data package takes less than 5 minutes. Less time than it takes to walk down the red carpet waving to all the paparazzi along the side rails.

I know Orange was specifically mentioned, but Claro currently has an offer available now, continuing through January featuring unlimited data. The schedule is as follows: 1 Day=$50...3 days=$95...5 days=$140. Of course, in pesos RD.
Again, this is for Claro. It may be more cost effective for you to pick up a new chip/number, with a new provider (Claro) for the long term. Never anticipate free (gratis) WiFi, especially here in RD.

Long overdue,,,, as long as the Uber fares do not exceed regular taxi fares i will continue to use Uber. I love the convenience of Uber, clean A/C vehicles, no hassle negotiating on fare, and in most cases courteous drivers. PLUS if any problems arise Uber is quick to resolve the matter.

Just curious the "new rates" have changed or was this the rate during peak hours? I just checked the Uber fare estimator and the base rate is the same. Either way if the rates were to increase no problem with me.

Are these new rates restricted to the Santiago region?

I use Uber several times every day to move people around the capital, and the fares have definitely gone up - what used to cost 250 now costs 300, sometimes 330. But to be honest they were way too low before, the drivers weren't making enough to cover the cost of finance on the vehicle and gas. So even though it's costing me more, I think it's a good thing.

Just throwing this out there as general information. If you want to compare your fares from different Uber rides just go online to your Uber account. Every Uber trip you have taken is stored in their database. You will be able to compare the ride you took today with a similar ride from maybe last year. The base fare seems to have not changed. If a trip takes longer or for some reason a longer distance quite naturally the fare would be different.

As always, if you feel you have been cheated just contact Uber.................
