The reality of the situation is that at 7000 pesos, he was paying higher than the going rate for maids, and if what he said is true in terms of others things that were going on, he was being taken advantage of. It isn't about the money, it's about what you pay someone to do and what their rights and responsibilities are. This has nothing to do with going for a poorly planned and executed trip on a Yola. The reason for all the Dominicans trying to get out of the country is because the Dominican people chose to elect a goverment that past experience should have told them would be corupt. Can you say Jorge Blanco? Now the whole country pays for PRD's mistakes. My wife(Dominicana) has fired so many maids in the past five years you have to go into double digits.

It is unfortunate that this person has to take unwarranted sideswipes at you, Hlywud. Tells us more about them than you. And the "psychoanalysis of the amateur" is detracting from the original purpose of the thread.

Hey Lambada,

I find his comments to both you and hlywud to be, well, "ironic" isn't quite the appropriate word........"ignorant" is a little closer to the mark. While I laud his concern for the plight of the Dominican people, there are those who pay lip service, and those who "put their money where their mouth is" both literally and figuratively. The fact that he seems to be attacking both of you in particular is kinda funny, in a way.

I could have spent my whole going to elite universities if my father had the money but instead I had to make due. So again does this make my opinion less valid or creditable? I will not compromise my political beliefs because I lack a MA from an elit universtity. So what your are implying that people who go to colleges are better than those who do not ? It easy to say who is realistic when you spend you life going to school trying to learn about the world while other are out here living and my analyses is correct and accurate when it come to you and that is you 'are a cyber bullies and you try to play mind games with your slick use of language and tired metaphors because is the way you intimidate people into thinking that you are the wiser one being a gifted writer who can spit out a ton of crap does not make you more worldly or wise? I know you hide behind is a timid man who would not say anything about this subject face to face. while people are dying to get the hell of DR., you sit and make little jokes . Do You have smart *** comment about what went down in Nagua? Hey those people did get an oppotunity to go an elite university all expensies paid via their parents, so what the hell pay them a dollar a day, What about the motor concho again? My original problem was why would some guy out of there way to commnet on a maid wanting to feed her child meanwhile you pay her a dollar a day? I realize what people get paid in DR. I know thousands of people there, but to go out of your way to whine about a poor maid I find sad and why would you joke and make fun of Dominican People if are so educated? How many Dominicans where in your College? Do you have any African American friends or you just fraternize with your fraternity bother and tell how you come to the Dominican Republic and sleep with young girls because lord knows you can not get anything at home.

Bacalao,
The point of the OP which you severely missed was that the OP was willing to pay the maid considerably more than the going rate AND treat her as much like family as possible out of the goodness of their hearts. However, the maid obviously mistook their kindness for weakness and attempted to exploit the situation to the max for her own personal gain.

One unfortunate fact that I have noticed on my trips to the DR is that Dominicans frequently mistake Gringo generosity as a lack of respect for money and a lack of intelligence. Buy a Dominican a beer and he assumes you are trying to buy his friendship. Give a Dominican a few pesos to help him out and he immediately attempts to trick you into giving him more. By being generous, one exhibits what is interpreted as a low intellect that is immediately attempted to be expolited. This, unfortunately, is what happened to the OP. Nothing more, nothing less.

After all that has been said...........and after the long conveluted (is that the correct spelling) words and sentences.............and after all the arguments.......and after all the reminders about the state of this world............and after the 'ignoring' and falling out............and after all the insults....................................

..................we simply have a situation where the maid was being paid more than the going rate.

I dont need to live in the DR or even on this planet to see that the OP was being quite reasonable. The next time i book myself and my wife into an AI hotel for 2 weeks, shall i just stay at home and have a Dominican couple enjoy that vacation because.......after all............they live in a poorer country than i do? Will that change the situation in the DR?

Why do so many people fall out on this site? Have some more self control? After all this arguing - is anyones mind changed? Is the world now a better place?

Save your breath Larry,

it seems Bacalao is off his meds.

Just try to follow his ramblings...it's quite a convoluted mess.

If it wasn't so pathetic, it might be amusing.

Gregg

P.S. - tired_boy, great minds think alike (but I think I win the spelling bee).

The End

Now the truth comes out that wonderful guy known as, CJ. His real name is Forrest, and he quite obese and is from Tampa Florida came to the Dominican Republic for one reason and it is not just to complain about maids eating his food but for something more sinister and exploitive. I knew this from the beginning yesterday but it was confirmed for me this evening from my sources in the country and if you believe me good if not well it does not matter. The reason he went to DR and rented that house in Sousa is because he wanted to set an Internet Porn chat room site using high speed Internet to hook up and cameras. He asked my partner if he knew any Dominican Girls who would do this type of work for a hundred US a month. He needed girls who could speak English, Personally I do not care what Forrest does while he is in the Dominican Republic but when he goes out of his way to say that my partner rip him off well then I get personal. My partner charged him 30 dollars for the airport pickup and two trips between Puerto Plata and Sousa and he waited over an hour while the guy did his shopping and being the fat **** that he is it took him a while. Forrest was complaining from the minute he landed about money. When he was picked up he was crying about tipping the bag-guys two bucks. If Forrest wants to dispute these accusations he can call us. We would love to talk to him so we can find out what his problem was but he can start first with apology here to my partner and I. Sorry to have been a pain all day, I do not take anything personal and I wish you a good night, and say a prayer for those folks in Nagua.

THAT was the information the big dramatic build up was for? Sort of anti-climactical, no pun intended :cheeky: .
And TOTALLY irrelevant to the issue of the maid. I'm tempted to enquire as to whether she would have preferred the "other" job.......but it paid less.....& you're right, rose, shhhhhhhh.

I bet you have a stutter or are really ugly and this is way of getting revenge on all the people who mocked you as young child. You are not going intimidate me with your abstract diatribe on the ways of the world. It sounds good but it all but it lacks substance and content.Just because my father could not afford to send me to college to take up philosophy dose not mean I do not understand way the world worlds nor am I unrealistic. I ve never seen a bigger group of elitists and bullies in my life. I have to ask why do you go to the Dominican Republic if you are constantly mocking the people and their culture?

Bacalao
I don't think anyone is mocking either the people or the culture. I think they are mocking you. You seem to have some sort of agenda as you do on other boards per Fireguy. You are upset because others don't embrace your thoughts and strike out. They are MOCKING YOU ONLY! Most Dominicans do NOT have your holier than thou attitude and are happy for the work, have a smile on their faces and full bellies.

BTW: Hllywud is pretty ugly and the worst thought in my mind would be seeing Larry instead of my maid every day!

OK, this has to be the most racist moronic comment I 'vet heard since this thread started. What you said sounds like something those plantations owners would say in the old south about their slaves working in the fields. The Dominicans, I know want clean water, electricity full time, and this is fact wither you believe it or not they are pathologically obsessed with material things, good schools, educations, and good doctors. Where do you get off by saying these sorts of backward things? If they are so content eating beans and rice why are the risking their lives to get the hell out of there? As for the attitude thing, go to Washington Heights and say what you just did and see if you don?t get some some would consider that neighborhood the Mecca of attitude. Why is everybody on this forum so anti-Dominican? It seems to me that you people really hate them and no respect for them as people.

I'm sorry but who was it that said, "Now the truth comes out that wonderful guy known as, CJ. His real name is Forrest, and he quite obese... I really wasn't going to get mixed up in this but I was wondering why it's ok to criticise someone that's obese but it's not ok to mention something that is quite true for a part of the Dominican population? I've spent weeks in Loma de Cabrera where people have only electricity and running water and although right now their situation isn't all that great I've never seen them without a smile on their faces... some of them will accept to do basically anything because the mentality down here is different. They don't see things the same way other countries do and although it's sad because some people use that innocence for their own personal gain, some Dominicans don't see that kind of thing as degrading, if not as a different way to make some cash. I personally don't approve it but if a person is willing, then it his/her choice.

But then again, that's my personal opinion.

A Canadian who's been in the DR for 8 years.

I am going to post my 500th post here now and say...........

Shouldn't this 'Trip Report' thread now be closed?

After 3 pages of posts - who has got anywhere? Hopefully my next post will be more useful to people using DR1 instead of having to remind people that we aren't here to bicker and moan, some peoples views will NEVER change so save your time and energy............i will !

Wow Bacalao, don't even know where to start with you.

First, let's get a few things clear here. Forrest is my father you twit, my name is Chris. Second, who the hell is CJ you illiterate buffoon? You asked a few questions, so let me answer them for you.

Question: "What is that like 120 for the month you said and then you cry property when she eats your food?"

Answer: Feeding her was never an issue, feeding her, her two daughters, and her brother for three weeks is unacceptable.

Question: Can I ask you, how many hours did require from the maid during the day?

Answer: She worked from 10:00am till noon, then went home and returned at 5:00 to cook dinner. She was getting paid for 4 weeks yet only working 3. Yep, you know us slave drivers cracking that whip.

You also write:
"You seem like the type of people who were bullied your whole lives and now you get off on this fourm by being bullies just to show people how smart and crass you can be."

Sounds like you speak from experience maybe? Some old saying about glass houses comes to mind.

Now, let's clear up a few other things. Let's start with the airport pickup. Don was contracted to pick us up at the airport. When he did so he brought a young translator with him and a driver. $18 was the quote he had given us prior to coming down, $20 is what he charged us. Then when he ran dad all the way to PoP to shop he charged $30 for the trip along with telling us we should "tip" the boy he brought to translate. We had never asked for a translator, he just showed up with him. $5 tip. So lets see, there is $35 for a trip that should have cost 600RD had we been told by our "guide" that we could shop right there in town.

As per your quote "My partner charged him 30 dollars for the airport pickup and two trips between Puerto Plata and Sousa and he waited over an hour while the guy did his shopping"

Better do the math again... $20 + $30 + $5 = $55. Don is a hustler, plain and simple. We learned our lesson, and moved on. I am sure there are plenty of people that have had what they think are good dealings with him due to the fact that they never bothered to learn the true costs of things.

Now, on to the next portion of your colorful responses. You claimed that I am coming to the country with some sinister plan to exploit the locals. Wow, you have me pegged. I admit that I am in the adult entertainment industry and am looking to expand into the DR. Everyone that I met there knows that, so sorry that your big secret wasn't so big after all. And as anyone I spoke with about hiring employees will tell you, I am far from the evil person you claim. I run my businesses with the attitude that if you keep an employee happy, they will be a loyal and hard worker. Hell, my offer for the employees also includes full payment of health care and schooling. But I guess either your friend failed to mention that, or it didn't fit in with your whole "Evil Gringo" thing you have going on here. Also, you called someone a pimp on these boards, yet you condone your "friend" Don sending over his 15 year old translator with an address to a local escort service after I commented on how good looking some of the girls were?

Anyways, you're not worth another moment of my time, I just wanted to help you out with a few of your misunderstandings.

Oh, and Lary.. if you can do that cleaning in a thong and heels your hired... heh...
