Now I would break you guys into 2 groups...
1. Ex-pats that want to make a good life here and
2. Ex-pats that want to exploit whatever they see or touch.

I for one believe the first group has honest and good intentions. Many Ex-pats have married, have children and have been a positive influence with their friends here and family. They don't think of swindling someone, lying to make a buck, infringing on another persons space, or having bad thoughts in general. Many have helped with local organizations that help the homeless and the children, and many have started businesses that don't cheat their customers. In general, good people.
NOW....group 2,

Just the opposite, will take whatever they can get, loud, belligerent, crude and tasteless without morals. These people can be spotted or heard a mile away and they are the ones that don't contribute a single thing except spending money here.
The difference between the 2 groups are light years apart and should never be lumped into the same category. IMHO......

don't expect me to apologize for spaniards and colonization, please. it was over half a century ago and it wasn't me.
don't be blind either: the slaughter would happen sooner or later by whoever happened to "discover" la hispaniola; europeans, sadly, had a knack at bringing civilizacion by the means of cross, sword and fire.
that reminded me - religion was also indruduced by spaniards. forcibly, no doubt :(

no matter how you look at it spaniards brought progress european way and shaped DR into what it is now. i am not defending conquistadors, i think the world would be better off without unnecessary violence. any discussion as to "what would happen if spaniards did not come" is pointless. we do not know what would have happened. constant invasions and war is a history off all nations on this earth...

That's a very charitable take on history, especially coming from someone of Polish descent. I suppose next you'll speak on how good Auschwitz was/is for the local economy, and how we could learn a thing or two from German efficiency. :bored::bored::bored:

In addition to progress and the Cross, the Spaniards also brought disease and slavery (to the three or four Taino indians that survived the smallpox) to our favorite little island. So let's try not to do too much sugarcoating here.

Get with the times. DNA has proven that the Tainos were around a much longer time than that. Please see the thread "Tainos in the DR".

As far as what benefit does the DR from my presence? My Dominican daughters love to have me around.

come on, man. over 500 hundred years ago, i am got gonna cry over it now. your "favourite little island" is what it is because of spaniards, do not forget that.
ps i am afraid nazis were indeed efficient, unfortunately. read ritzer's "mcdonaldization of society" to see how this effiency is continued in todays world...

many people do charitable thingies and do not seek nor need any support of the general public, because they do not do their part to get assistance from others, they just do THEIR part and leave it to others/general public to do THEIRS.

What benefits do the US gets from us?, let's see; we must be around 1.5 millions folks, we pay our bills, we shop at the local's store (that rin tin tin must be familiar eh?), we consume a lot and don't give me the "US is a mature economy" crap, cuz 70% of the US economy is consumer's expending.

Back in the 80's, we took what was a decaying business at the hand of the locals (bodegas) and literally made them cash cow (without selling drugs). At the beginning of the 90's we owned about 90% of the bodegas and most of the supermarkets.

We perform dangerous, bitchy jobs that few people have the cojones to do; like being taxi drivers.

If you ever come to NY don't be deceived by the "Spanish Food" sign in front of restaurants, in NYC Spanish food=Dominican food cuz we own most of the restaurant that serve that type of food here.

We own most of the beauty salons in NYC, in fact; Dominican hair stylist are in such a high demand that I've personally seen several beauty salons owned by non-Dominicans with a "Dominican style" sign in their front, without having one single Dominican personnel.

We are partially responsible for the real estate boom experienced by NY and NJ in the last two decades.

I could give you more but I'm tired.

A friendly reminder; there's 111 millions Mexicans waiting for a chance to shop & pay their bills in the US.

Normally, I would not even bother to go into discussion with the likes of you... but you went a little bit too far...

I have no idea how many people from the DR live in the US or Europe, and neither do you, as many of them are illegals, not paying taxes, healthcare, etc... I wish them all the best, but please do not represent them as the saviours...

as far as consuming a lot and paying the bills goes... isn't that what you are accusing us foreigners off???... so it is ok for you, but not for us??? Please stop being so obnoxious...

if the "Spanish" food is in reality Dominican... thanks for the warning... there is no comparison possible, and believe it as I worked for a Spanish company for 7 years...

To be honest... I think you need to grow up and fast... learn about world economics, learn about world integration, politics, etc... in other words, become intel****
