I hope that Tony C's attempts to make a joke re converteds haven't given you the wrong idea. I know a number of them from my many years of living in Samana. About 95% of the people in the DR are Catholic. Many of the rest are members of one of the fundamentalist Protestant groups, such as Seventh Day Adventist, Baptist, etc. These are what people are calling the Converteds. They are very serious about their religion and they are very anti-Catholic, who they believe worship idols (the many statues, etc., displayed prominently in Catholic churches). They read the bible, attend church services regularly, participate in Men's Clubs, etc, in the church, and take literally what is said in the bible. They attempt to practice in their daily lives the teachings of Christ, etc., as recorded in the bible. If they were living in many parts of the US, they would not be noteworthy since there are a great many who live and worship in the same way. But they do stand out in the DR. First because they are Protestants in a Catholic country. Second because they are more conservative in their dress and behavior than most of the rest.
