Hello,
There’s been a price change on the following destinations and dates:

Received the above Google Flight alert at 6:48 pm. Checked other locations like POP for JUL and AUG from EWR and regular economy jumped from 524 (yesterday) to 866 now. I hope this is not a trend for the other airlines. I suspect they are anticipating the removal of the middle seat and raising fares immediately. I guess I could reach Platinum status at these prices if they remain this high.
F thieves they should rotten in hell

That is a good way to keep tourists away. I would never pay these prices for a 3.5 hr flight.

Dominican Airport Taxes have always driven up the cost of tickets to the DR.

It's bad business and makes other Caribbean destinations less expensive. Bad for tourism.

Never understood the logic.

Really ?

I have been going to Jamaica lately and airfare is generally more expensive than DR (not by much, but it always is), at least from NYC. I haven't been to other islands besides these 2 in a while, so my knowledge is limited, but I thought DR was the cheapest.

I just did a Kayak and hit a bunch of dirt cheap flights same route same dates. That cut and paste from the OP looked wierd

It is how it copied from my gmail account message. Yes, other airlines have cheaper flights. Let me try a screenshot from the website. It worked, screenshot from minutes ago on UA website.

I hope UA is just temporarily testing the waters and remain an outlier. Or could it be a trend to come by other airlines? I am not sure how to read what they are doing. Just alerting others. It could be a sign. Signs are everywhere. The challenge is how to read them.

What you will find if you dig into the United flights (click to see what airports the flight goes through) you will see there are stops. In some cases EWR to Tampa and then on to Panama! before circling around to SDQ. They are charging you for the longer flight. Notice how many hours the flights take. (This is exactly what they did for our outbound late May flight PUJ to EWR - we leave PUJ, go to PTY then back to ORD. Lol. I canceled.)

Probably they decided to keep poorer mongers away from DR.

If the whole country would get infected that would be about 10,000 deaths, as the death rate in such case is estimated to be 0.1%

I point you the the Stanford, NY City, USC and Imperial College studies...
also see El Caribe looong but very explanative article today

OK, lets assume that rate. No one knows yet for sure, but why not go with 0.1 %

10000 is still more then the 3000 traffic accident death per year.

Even if you assume, just 50% of the country gets infected, which would be 5000 it still more then 3000.

The thing is, although DR is world record leader in traffic accidents, the virus still kills more.

Well, Condor has doubled and in part more then doubled the prices between Europe and DR too for May and June.

Can you please provide the link to the article you were reading just today. I am pretty sure many of us would like to be kept up to date of details as such.

The claim of that doctor is, that its 4x times more. Cases and death. Thats in a conservative estimation on the lower end, given other data from US or Italy. (like 50x more cases or 6x more death) - but at least its someone qualified going on record in DR saying the numbers are wrong.

"
Feliz Cuello maintains that the cases reported daily are “credible,” but “with an overdraft of more than four times the amount confirmed daily.”

He claims that the exact number of people who have died from the disease is unknown, as well as those infected “due to the inadequate strategy that has been followed.”

“Those who have been reporting have been clinical cases with positive results, but the truth is that the pandemic has covered the entire national territory, only Elías Piña was missing and already has confirmed cases, to the point that we have provinces with more than one hundred cases,” says Feliz Cuello.

Maybe, we are too close to the forest? So, I went to Google and put in the magic words of covid and the Dominican Republic. The first page of the first 15 hits reads just like any other city or state or country that has been afflicted . Of course there is a travel advisory at level 4. That is during the crisis and while the DR is locked down. Thats normal and the same as NYC my friends. They will read all of the same stuff in a couple of months that every country is going to report.
Don't underestimate the will of the Dominican people, the need to vacation, the ability of hotels and airlines to attract people. And pray.

I completely agree, that DR is not worse nor better then the other tourist destinations. I searched a little bit, the other Latin American countries are at that same level of testing, some like Colombia are being more strict or better organised in their rules but have more or less the same amount of cases, but overall I do not think there will be a significant difference, nor would I see a reason why Dominican Republic would be in any "worst place" category - that first place of worst virus place in South America is firmly in the hand of Brasil. Anyone planning to go to Brasil may for example now go to DR.

The thing others have said before, I do think there will be a bias against long-distance travel. That may or may not be a problem for US tourists as this - depending where you live - is almost short distance - however I think just going south to Florida may be an option -, but for European and Chinese tourists this will be a big issue.

Yes more deaths, but way more cases, and the whole situation is nowhere as serious as they try to present to us.

You should watch the whole interview with these two frontline doctors who also are microbiologists and virologists.
