Wow, thanks! I didn't know it was so easy. I'll pass that along. Gosh, you're smart!
Omg. I was starting to warm up to you. Anywhere in the world is tough job re placement. I want to add, sir I have consulted to organizations in this place for 17 years. Ie. Manufacturing, call center, malls, grocery chain, booze distillery, University just to name a few! These operations employ hundreds of thousands of folks. And many pay more and have much more stable work schedules than big T. You're looking at this country from the eyes of Everything name your town expat perspective. Sorry you have a huge curve to come up on.

Don't be ignorant Nan. Get some time in the trenches. There's a whole world out there of different sectors. Construction, retail, etc. All that don't rely on supplying the Hilton Boca Chica.
You're correct, there is a whole world out there of different sectors. Unfortunately the majority of those are in the start of a significant recession, hopefully not ending up in a depression. Those that control the majority of the wealth in the world would like more and want to see the economy rebound.

The tourism sector provided 11.6% of the nations GDP in 2018. This money had velocity in that it benefitted other sectors of the economy. The loss of the tourism dollars/euros has a significant ripple effect to the contruction, agriculture, retail, and restaurant businesses to name a few. Jobs are being lost in all sectors and it will take a very long time for many dominicans to find decent employment.

The government is absolutely aware of this and is going to try to restart travel and tourism as soon as possible. The moment the US allows international travel I expect you will see things restart here.

Yes in those terms I agree. They do, however, have the resources to weather the storm. The economy and life can take a hit but will not be disabled by big T.

Low wage earners can find jobs.
Higher skill labor can go across many industry like manufacturing, Telco, etc.
If I were in NYC right now it would take me 5 months to find a gig more or less. Here folks can do that faster.

if it wasn't for manufacturing and mining I would have never been to DR . The mining industry employs thousands as does industrial and ag. The D.R is unique in that it needs a lot of special equipment imported to turn their gas and fuel into power

Its sort of organised in cartel style monopoles.... back home we buy dr avocados at 4chf a piece ( 250 pesos give or take ), but here you have a hard time selling them at 20 pesos.....
Not much incentive unless you have a shitload of land and lots of connections.

Pre covid-19 the Haitians were low salaried construction workers. Dominicans didn't want that kind of work (LOL the union kind of work my father did all his life in NYC ).I read here on DR1 100,000 went back to the border to wait out the lock down. Who is to say that work is not appealing post covid? At some point everyone needs to do what they need to do to survive.

It didn't, but Punta Cana airport, which is by far the busiest on the island, will not reopen until the hotels reopen. And the loads at Santo Domingo would not be sufficient for anything other than a handful of routes (e.g. New York, Miami, maybe Atlanta, maybe Madrid, maybe Panama) if there are no tourists. Tourists, and those flying who work in tourism, form a very significant component of air passengers.

Well 1985 when I flew first time to DR, punta cana was still a malaria swamp and las terrenas had 20 fisher man inhabitants, did not see a single tourist. There was

NYC - SDQ by dominicana aviacion 747 daily as well as PANAM
I think there was iberia SDQ-MAD and even a KLM to Amsterdam (if not it was via Caracas).

Without tourists the dominicans living in New york still need flights like in 1985. Spain has business in its colony.
There will be flights, dont worry. Cost will be 3 times higher as it was like that 1985. Some reallocation of budget to higher travell cost or going only ever 3rd year.

life continuos and ww have been at that point before.

I made the oposite observation. I saw a piña for the same price in Santo Domingo as in a supermarket in Austria. Of course I am no expert and did not investigate quality, but I was thinking that exporting food cant really be a good business. I did once research about transporting mangos and found out that only 2 of 100 types of mango can be transported long distance. Not necessarily the best tasting 2. Thats why they taste better im RD. Which is another reason why exporting is not dead easy - I was reading about the plans to go into that direction instead of tourismo. Yes, but I guess not over night and thrre is a reason for tourism before : Easier money.

Absolutely agree, once you remove tourism the rest comes crashing down like a pack of cards. Please remember that US tourists are maximum 50% of the tourists that come. Planes from Europe, Russia, China and places like Argentina are also an important part of the market, and they have to fly for much longer so need bigger loads to justify coming. The DR was always a relatively cheap destination compared to other Caribbean islands, and the whole Punta Cana model was built on a numbers game - 1000's of bedrooms, very high occupancy, cheap rates. Even if the US comes, if Europe doesn't and the occupancy falls to 60% the model doesn't work.

How did the RD exist without the "Punta Cana model"?
