How did the RD exist without the "Punta Cana model"?

On a much smaller scale and on much poorer scale, at least for the majority of Dominicans. Nowhere near the number of tourists that it has today, nowhere near the levels of income or prosperity that the country enjoys today. I know we tend to focus on the corruption, but the huge investment made in education for example would not have been possible without the huge increase in taxes, and the growth of tourism is a key part of this.

Tourism will come back. I am more optimistic. Maybe next summer at 80% of before numbers. If the DR at the same time understands to develop more other industries it could in a few years be a stronger economy.

What’s the latest on the flights going in and out ? Still a Ferry flight to US weekly. Today a ferry flight to Canada and a couple scheduled for Madrid.

There are a lot of airlines planning on June flights.. American now has realistic prices that seam to be based on demand when you see the monthly schedule. I booked June 22 RT for 26K miles PUJ-MIA.. previously everything had just been 10K miles and then they cancel a week before the flight.

Just saw on the DR news one of the ministers was on and said that the DR is not yet ready to open up. The curfew continues. The president could ask for another extension of emergency powers.

I think Punta Cana destroyed tourism in Purto Plata and hurt other areas like Boca Chica, Las Terrenas, Samana , and Bayahibe. Those areas have adapted but nothing like they were pre Punta Cana.
That dump hurt itself more than anything. That place is more if an embarrasment than anywhere dedicated to tourists in the DR and possibly the whole continent. Then there's the image which is partly based on truth. Boca Sida as many people call it.

Guess it’s good we took an early ferry flight into EWR then, thanks for the update.

You're welcome. I'll let you all know Monday if I arrive in NY. I saw the flights to EWR listed a couple of weeks ago but, upon tracking all the flights, saw that they were nonexistent. And since I'm waiting still for Delta and American to refund my money for two non-existent flights for which I bought tickets, I wasn't going to fall into that trap a third time.

I’m still waiting for United’s refund , should be over $800, they’re slower than molasses

As i mentioned before, United refunded my money within a week. I was truly shocked! I don't know if you're calling in the States, but I spoke to someone in Santo Domingo.

For what it's worth, my landlord here in Puerto Plata, who is in the air force, assures me that the airports will be open again in June. As discussed frequently here, airlines, flights, and prices remain to be seen.

There is no question this is true. I saw it happen while living here.

As for reopening: Not happening yet. More likely is another extension of the curfew.
