Regarding tourists and tourism -

My opinion is -

Yes, the world and the DR are changing.... no more 'old' normal

Visas will be altered

The face of tourism will change.
Firstly, IMO, the initial tourists will be aimed at Punta Cana and the AI's
Like a quarantine - they will arrive , be escorted to their destination,
mingle among themselves - nobody outside the resort -
and be escorted to their departing flight.

Not difficult to facilitate and gets the hotel/tourist of to a start.

Now - the independent tourist.... who wants to step off the plane and go where the wind blows them -
That may be a while opening up
The 'free roaming' tourist will change for sure ... IMO

Perhaps - if you apply for residency - you'll be allowed to enter to complete that.... seems reasonable to me.

We know the DGM has been tracking overstayers....
Now, those overstayers are at a distinct disadvantage.

We have yet to see how this will develop...
but for sure...
the tourist industry will get a push... too large a factor not to get help.

as we have always said.... the AI tourist is the one that drives the industry
They will be the initial focus as I see it

The others will wait - IMO
We may be part of the group you call the overstayers. We come in Dec or Jan, stay in a Condo & leave in April. There is no other way, but to pay an overstay fee when we leave. Believe me, I've done plenty of checking on that. This year we're really over stayers. Came mid Dec & probably won't get out of here til July. Not taking a flight into New York.

I like to spar as well, just not with people above my weight class that make a living out of saying "enjoy your flight" 10 thousand times
What''s funny Louise is that you said you were a "businessman". Amazing what some folks call a business I guess. That is hilarious. I also had several businesses, not solely relying on my airline career. You know, real companies that were actually incorporated. Your knuckles must be raw by now. Looking forward to your next snappy retort, honey. But you're still smarting from being emasculated by a female ticket agent. You described the incident as 1 of the "real tragedies of "9/11". Remember that lunacy?

the 'all u can' eat and drink concept encouraged by the AI's has killed more people (obesity and alcoholism) than 10 covid 19 outbreaks. At least with covid you go in about a week. With obesity its a long slow painful death. Bad knees, joints ,diabetes heart and lung problems, copd and of course the look of disgust that everyone gives you when they see you in public.
Little, now I understand what's behind all the vitriol in your posts. Now that you've explained your life I feel sorry for you and will refrain from verbally abusing a person in your condition. My condolences;I can see how your condition would make you too bitter, constantly receiving "looks of disgust".

Hopefully you were drunk when you posted this crap, and you're not really a guy with 40 posts going after other members.

I think it was meant for a "public" beach not a beach that is in front of a hotel. I guess?
All beaches are legally public in the DR. Getting to a beach might be an issue if the only access from land is through private property, but the beach itself is legally in the public domain.

Only in the DR would there be a 4 step plan that has 5 steps. Note the 5 highlighted steps from the president's web page:

I honestly don't know. If they quash the exit fee, as in make an overstay impossible, then they need alternate route to that particular income. Although half at best is reported to the DGII. I wonder how much they collect annually in this overstay fees W2. Last time I had to pay one was the last time I was ever on a plane. Year 07. 100 big ones. Zero receipt given.
The number of people that overstay is insignificant compared to the revenue being lost just in Punta Cana or just from the Cruise industry. Millions of entry and exit fees for those tourists versus a few thousand overstay fees. It is no wonder they have not focused much on the snowbird issue.

This thread is getting rather tedious. Two posters exchanging unintelligible "jokes" and two others exchanging insults. Before anybody says I don't have to read it, the original subject,
"When will DR open for International travel??????"
is of interest and importance for me.

Yeah, the mods need to open up kindergarten---- errrr OT---- to keep the kids/biznismen/astronauts/politologues amused.

Otherwise, AA sometimes shows my flights, sometimes not, when i check with my flight locator thingy....... fun times !

The overstay fees are especially insignificant compared to what the US and EU probably requests them to do and the DR wants to keep getting US and EU/Schengen visas. I don’t think the US or EU really wants its citizens to “live” long term as non residents in other countries.

One just has to look at Brazil to understand the policy of the DR. Brazil has a huge spike in cases and I think I saw in the news that the US is considering a travel ban from Brazil.
That is what happens when you isolate for months. Isolation relaxes and cases spike. No pandemic was ever ended by isolation aka social distancing.

As a US citizen, I have never seen anything to indicate the US cares if its citizens live outside US borders regardless of their "status" in another country. As long as you pay your taxes, all is good.

Canadians have the issue of health care going away dependent upon their province if they are out of Canada too long. No idea about the EU.

Looks like DR airports reopen July 1, unless that changes.
