Why does the electricity intermittently go off a few times daily in 2024?

It’s incredible and wrap my head on how in 2024 there’s still an issue with electricity in DR. Have an apartment in Piantini & not to whine because it could be so much worse case in point outages in the barrios for extended periods of times. Issue I have is with the electronic devices which depend on a constant wattage & constant electrical connection. I’ve replaced 2 smart locks modules & locks as well besides a compact oven. Electricity surges & outages do affect electronic appliances. Building has a generator but the outages thou for 1-2 minute occur a few times daily meanwhile Edesur is absolutely making a killing with their fees

We have the same issue in Boca Chica. As I said in another thread, it has gotten better this year.

My hypothesis on the switching on and off is that they have what I call an A/B switch for source power that they either alternate for maintenance or for a heavier load. I'm not convinced the load theory is correct because it happens at all hours, even the night.

Another poster has said that as long as the govt runs things it will always be like this. I believe that.

Have blink camera outside the front door & Yale lock which depend on a WiFi connection happens daily where I’m getting devices are offline msgs besides same msg from router router as well. Have surge protectors on major appliances. Not an electrician but this constant power outages which safe to assume follow power surges not good ..router resets extremely uncomfortable when I need to ask a friend to go over and reset the modem when I’m not there

Our short intermittent outages are usually followed by a ´boom´ in the distance at various time intervals, depending which transformer has the short-out .

The short-outs are usually caused by short-outs from the bird nests built at the transformers.
When the electric goes off I listen for the ´boom´ to estimate how far away the short-out occurred.

Get yourself a small inverter and run your sensitive equipment breakers through it. Your electronics will thank you.

We had one of those, a huge one, right on the pole beneath which we had meters for the whole gated community in POP. Edenorte actually was there several times doing this and that, but the nest they ignored... The nest did not, however, caused any problems for us, but it was interesting to see EDE techs staring at it and then driving away... I wonder how it never even caught fire...

You could try putting a UPS on your router so the power outages don't perform power on resets to it.

Power brownouts are especisally bad on appliances. I still have a battery/inverter system for my house, so that is my UPS.

because corruption & incompetence .. ?
Correct. Get rid if the EDEs to get rid of these, corruption and incompetence problems. People with private power companies paying them directly have much better electricity.

The electricity sector is too screwed up to keep
up with demand.

Forgot to mention the numerous soft resets which need to be done with the blink module every so often like today lol ..I’m actually locked out at the moment since my Yale smart lock went limp. It’s completely dead ..9 volt battery hack isn’t working. Not sure what to do. Probably deal with the lock issue next month when I get there. Again could be worse shouldn’t be complaining just jaw dropping how unstable electricity is in DR

Guessing either a surge/brownout or the lock itself reconnecting to the WiFi when electricity goes off daily caused some sorta internal damage. Need to get a locksmith to physically remove it & buy a replacement. Purchased the lock 6 months ago ..lesson def learned on my behalf never purchase a keyless smart lock.

The Dominican government privatized the distribution of the electric in the late 90's. 3 zones in the country and one company won two of the contracts. I'm pretty sure that fell apart. In 1998 the system had 40% of electricity y produced paid for, 40% stolen and 20% in line loss. The high voltage wires stayed under the control of the government and generation has always been privatized expect maybe for the large hydroelectric systems. Not sure who owns the solar and wind farms.

The problem in the DR with electricity if to have proper metering and require people pay for the energy they consume. I was told the municipal governments do not pay and military above the rank of major.
