So, Hug, I suppose you think it is okay to be under the influence of drugs and drive as well?? You baffle me. Yes, lots of accidents from those that are NOT impaired, but also from those who ARE impaired. Why in Gods name would you want to put yourself in this position? its like playing Russian roulette. I have 4 kids all grown. They go clubbing and always have a designated driver with them. If not, they call a responsible person or cab to get home safely. Thank God they have their heads on straight.

I still drink and drive but try to limit my exposure.
You may limit YOUR exposure, but you expose everyone else on the road to your irresponsibility.

I don't believe "we all know our limits." Alcohol reduces inhibitions and impairs judgement, so "knowing our limits" is a dubious claim.

I'm not sure your comment is supported by the facts.

According to the Minister of Health's office, 80% of all traffic accidents with injuries involve a moto, and 80% of those involve alcohol.*

Those are big numbers.

So, yes, most accidents in the DR do involve alcohol.

*I'm working on a moto project with that office and have been provided with the data generated by clinics.

I did better than I'd thought, I mentioned a few days ago on the other thread that the vast majority of accidents are caused by motos and my guestimate was spot on if your numbers are correct.
So, if 80% of accidents involving injury or death are riders under the influence then that covers 64% of the entire accident toll. With 16% being sober rider. Thats motos.

And so by your numbers only 20% of accidents are caused by drivers. And so even if you use the same %age down to drivers under the influence that is only 16% of accidents involve people who are under the influence.
Now how many of these would of occurred whether or not alcohol was involved I do not know, neither do you. It is a drunk society and so impossible to say. I'd say some, so........................................................................

That explains why the motos dribe like idiots.

I do not know, like I say, people need to police themselves. If you can not drive after using drugs then you know it. And so if you decide to then you suffer the consequences. I do believe there is a difference between driving under sifferent substances because you can not be sure what you take when it comes to drugs.

Not what I said.

I said 80% involve motos, not who is at fault.

I suspect an impaired cage driver is far more likely to whack a moto than a sober driver.

I know I've come close and never drink & drive at all.

That does not absolve drinking-while-motoing which is common.

It DOES say the #1 way to reduce road carnage in the DR is to crack down harshly on drinking & driving.

Well, the figures mean little if they do not cover whos fault it is. Unless you were a motorbike insurer.

64% involve alcohol.

That's all you need to know.

Besides, "finding fault" in the DR is an almost impossible task.

"No es me culpa!"

Well, no, but as we don't know then the figures given, if accurate, show that drink drivers are not as big as an issue as some think.

It is an impossible ask, we can only have our opinion, and I'll stick to mine.

All life is cheap in the DR (animal and human). The government is not interested in road safety as there is no way for politicians to skim money and no one seems to care until one of theirs is killed.I can honestly say that all my accidents with motos happened when I was either drunk or sober, that I remember.

Well it ain't going to happen within my lifetime that's for sure. Socialise in Santiago and you will find that the majority if Dominicans do not share your point of view. Where I drink in Santiago there are at least 4 senior AMET officers who meet most nights for a few beers and then drive their AMET jeeps home.

One country's interpretation of being a drunk driver varies considerably and indeed the Scandinavians have a zero level of alcohol in the blood.

This thread could continue forever, with those who believe the can safely drive after a few drinks and those who would never take that chance.
