Rum & Coffee... Duty Free favorites for overcharging.

And they know it....

It is really unbelievable what Duty Free charges for Dominican Rum and coffee. Anyway Duty Free is a ripoff on a lot of things. The only thing you have going for you in Duty Free is liquor in 1 Liter bottles instead of .75L. And most of the rum is not in 1L bottles, in fact some are .7 L.

But be aware that in the DR you can get a 15% discount if you ask and buy a lot. Also any pilot will get this also. Out of the DR it is 20% for pilots.

i have just returned from spending a weekend in punta cana. I agree with the OP, its a town without a soul. I felt depressed there and felt there is nothing to do except drink and go to beach. Not my type of a town, not even for a weekend. On the way back, I stopped at Bayahibe beach. I must say, I enjoyed that beach more as there were people who looked more alive and the town seemed more welcoming.
i was thinking of working in punta cana. Thought about putting a chiropractic office there. Now I think it's best if I stay in santo domingo. I will be bankrupt soon in punta cana as there aren't any real people living there to fill up my office and the ones who do live there are probably are hiding in their own homes. The place seemed like a ghost town.

AZB, this is exactly how I felt when I was in that area before they really built it up. I am sure I would have the same feelings that you did if I went there again. It's great for people from a cold climate that want a week somewhere warm with everything included.

I was just checking on some AI's in PC in October for some friends. I did see quite a few discounts being offered, but I think it's pretty common this time of tear to get discounts.

I was surprised that several of the hotels were sold out on some of the dates I was checking. There were other dates with availability.

Good news!

Many major Punta Cana Hotels will give good discounts for locals with a Cedula. Ask before you book for one.

Punta Cana is like Las Vegas, caters to the tacky, less adventurous crowd, and yet everyone has to go once to verify how lame it really is.

The beach used to be its saving grace, but having lost that to the sargassum sea weed invasion, may have doomed the AIs to a death by a thousand cuts ?

Does anyone have a recent beach-seaweed report for the area ?

Post, but I saw none
it was this spring....

We rented a condominium on the beach.....very nice
But parking 50 yds away.....

Just awkward all around is how I found the area
A visitor wouldn't notice

It works for them !!

This year I have been three times to Punta Cana... staying in a home in La Marina de Punta Cana (on the south end), Bahia Principe and Melia Punta Cana Beach in the center. In none of the three was there sargassum that in any way affected beach swimming. In all the barrier set up by the hotels was catching anything that was in the area.

This year I also was at Dominicus beach in the Bayahibe area. No sargassum there either.

I think Punta Cana is a good vacation product that over the year got better... it is rest and leisure tourism. It is not for everyone. But from my experience traveling in the Caribbean, I can speculate the product in its kind -- beach tourism -- is hard to beat.

Think Disney, it's not for everyone, the same way Las Vegas is not for everyone, as mentioned above. But Punta Cana delivers very comfortable and relaxing hotel stays with a very good beach, very good weather, lots of people eager that you have a good time....

Punta Cana may have grown too fast... It is now one of the big players in tourism in the world, and as such it needs to keep its standards high because it is being judged as what it is.

Travel companies dictate where casual tourists go based on the resort packages these companies offer and at what price.

Most travelers want direct flights, and thrifty prices. That's on offer in Punta Cana.

Yes. See the flight information counts from the airport. Common knowledge or are you being sargassumistic.
