Diario Libre reports on a proposal to reduce cost of milk, whereby the two leading importers of powdered milk, Mej?a Arcal? (Millex) and Nestl? Dominicana, are suggesting that the government eliminate the 20% tax on milk imports. The price of powdered milk has increased 100% as of late, reflecting the depreciation of the peso and cost increases from abroad. Powdered milk imports own 43% of the total milk market and is a major budgetary consideration for low-income families without access to adequate refrigeration.
A liter of fresh milk can be purchased for RD$15 on sale, while its regular price is closer to RD$24.
