AG to indict 37 in passport case

According to Frank Soto, the deputy Attorney General who was in charge of investigating the suspects in the fraudulent passport case that was uncovered last year, said that this week the AG Department will indict 37 council members, false council members, former Civil State officials and mayors for their connections to the case. According to Soto, if they had to indict all those accused of involvement, there would be over 70 names on the list. According to Diario Libre, Soto explained that the number will be lower because a number of individuals who got married to obtain the passports have not been located and others are abroad. Soto stated that Dominican Municipal League (LMD) Secretary General, Amable Aristy Castro, is not among those indicted as “there is currently no possibility of involvement” on his part. The scandal involves a number of imposters who, acting as elected council members, applied for and obtained official passports from the Ministry of Foreign Relations, which they later used to get visas to travel abroad, mainly to European countries. Because of this case, the LMD’s Deputy Secretary General, Amaury Guzman was removed from office, as were the Deputy Director of the Migration Department, Victor Soto, five Civil State officials, 22 elected council members duly identified by the Central Electoral Board, and one mayor.
