Two arrested in aircraft case

A Colombian national and a Dominican have been arrested in connection with an incident in which a small aircraft crashed into the Caribbean Sea early on Sunday morning, reportedly while trying to land on the Autovia del Este. Colombian pilot Juan Jose Ramirez said that he was forced to fly to the Dominican Republic and that it was the first time he had made the trip, according to a report in Diario Libre. Dominican Julio Cesar Pena Lopez was allegedly waiting for the plane to land on the road. Both are being questioned at the National Drug Control Department (DNCD). Pena Lopez is listed at the DNCD for attempting to smuggle 300 kilos of an unspecified drug several years ago. The light aircraft fell in the sea near Punta Caucedo and Boca Chica. DNCD spokesman Buenaventura Bueno Torres said that the plane is presumed to have been bringing drugs, something they expect to determine through their investigations. A search is being conducted throughout the area to try to find the drugs it may have been carrying.
