Government suppliers double during Medina administration

Speaking at the weekly press conference at the National Palace yesterday, Monday 27 May, the General Controller of the Republic Rafael Germosen Andujar said that the government now has procurement contracts with 31,000 companies, up from 16,800 at the end of the Fernandez administration. He attributed the increase to the new trust generated by the Medina administration in the control and quality of spending. He said that of the 31,000 companies, 9,000 are first time suppliers and of these, 6,832 are small or medium-sized companies. The Medina administration has actively sought to encourage small companies to benefit from government procurement contracts.

Addressing the issue of improvements in government spending, he said that the government is working on detecting persons that are features more than once on the government payroll.

He said that there were between six and seven thousand duplicates. Nevertheless, he explained that there are many cases of employees who receive minimum wages of up to RD$4,000 a month and then another job that increases this monthly amount. He commented these cases need to be given special consideration. He said that the most common cases of people with two government jobs consisted of teachers and nurses as they worked several shifts.
