The Migration Department has announced that together with the Barahona sugar mill and the cooperation of the Army, they will facilitate the return of more than 500 Haitian seasonal workers to their country, the first time in more than 30 years since the service was suspended. They said that the process would take place after successfully regularizing the legal status of all of the returnees.
They will exit through the Jimani border crossing. Executives from the Barahona sugar mill said they were providing transport to Haiti for their former employees.
The mill is the first in the sector to go through the process of legalizing the workers, with the support of the Haitian government via their consulate in Barahona, which is issuing passports and documentation.
Migration director Jose Ricardo Taveras said that this was an historic event, and in this way the results of the regulation of migration policy would gradually be seen. He said that the buses would be full of Haitian citizens, with their belongings and goods bought with the fruits of their labor, which would thus benefit both countries.
