Dominicans residing illegally in Puerto Rico for at least a year could soon apply for driver’s licenses after Puerto Rican Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla was able to get the House of Representatives in Puerto Rico to pass new legislation. Media reports in Puerto Rico say the Senate is likely to also approve the measure that would benefit around 100,000 Dominicans by enabling them to come to public light and open bank accounts. The ruling party has the majority in both houses of Congress. Driver’s licenses in Puerto Rico have the weight of an ID card. The measure is also expected to generate new resources for the government of Puerto Rico. To grant driver’s licenses, the Puerto Rican government will require up-to-date consular identification or passport from the nation of citizenship.
