The Dominican poultry industry produces on average 15.5 million chicken units and over five million eggs a day, and employs 15,000 people. The president of the Dominican Poultry Farmers’ Association (ADA), Bolivar Cartagena, said that the industry turns over around US$730 million every year, as reported in Diario Libre. Cartagena says that the Dominican Republic is self-sufficient in poultry production.
He described the ban on formal exports of chickens and eggs to Haiti as inexplicable. He said the Haitians impose the ban on and off depending on circumstances in Haiti. Cartagena said that exports continue to Haiti regularly but through informal markets.
