The ruling PLD party’s Political Committee has been summoned to a Monday, 29 June 2015 meeting at 7pm at the party headquarters on Av. Independencia. In the PLD party structure, the Political Committee has the last word on party policies and programs. In its last meeting on 19 April 2015, the PLD committee approved changing the 2010 Constitution to incorporate consecutive presidential re-election.
The Political Committee has on the agenda to follow through on the recent change of the 2010 Constitution that enables President Danilo Medina to be the party’s candidate in the 15 May 2016 election. To secure the necessary votes in the constitutional revisory assembly, the PLD reached agreements with the PRD and PRSC parties.
Reinaldo Pared Perez, secretary general of the organization of the party, said that also on the agenda is the appointment of who will direct the National Electoral Commission in charge of the election of the presidential candidates. Likewise, on the agenda are discussions of possible candidates to legislative and municipal positions that remain as a result of the PLD agreement with the incumbent senators and deputies that they would be the candidates nominated for the 2016 elections, a move that was made in order to secure their votes for re-election. He said on the agenda is the review of the electoral agreement between the PLD and PRD. Diario Libre speculates the agreement includes appointments in government.
In a back page commentary today, Diario Libre reports that the attendance of former President Leonel Fernandez and his supporters had not been confirmed.
