Elpidio Baez, the new (as of 16 August 2015) spokesman for the block of deputies for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) has said that the party will respect the commitment made by the party’s Political Committee that senators and deputies who are currently in their posts will be the candidates for the forthcoming elections in 2016 for the PLD and PRD alliance.
Baez, who is also a member of the PLD Central Committee, said that those who wanted to be candidates, but who are currently not in post would need to wait.
Being interviewed on El Dia, he said that if the 35 members of the Political Committee promote a breaking of the agreement then there will be problems. He did, however, confirm that the agreement did not include the mayor positions because it was agreed that these would be chosen taking into account results of polls. He said the party could not support candidates who would obviously lose.
The agreement was signed between the PRD and the PLD in order to obtain the necessary votes to pass the constitutional amendment that allowed for President Danilo Medina to run for consecutive re-election in the 2016 national election.
