Haitians still crossing the border into the Dominican Republic

According to Vianey Medina, Governor of Independencia province that is on the border with Haiti, the number of undocumented Haitians entering the country is still on the rise, but these seem to be traveling in small groups.

Medina said that higher numbers of Haitians have been seen walking along different roads in Jimani, near the border, which is evidence of the flow of undocumented people coming from Haiti into the Dominican Republic.

Medina reminded reporters that when the Foreigner National Legalization Plan expired on 17 June, there was a lull in the numbers of Haitians seen entering the country, but now they are again seen traveling by foot from Haiti into the Dominican Republic across the dozens of unauthorized transit points.

He also mentioned that he has been told that dozens of Haitians were returning to their country every day. He said that the border at Jimani was calm and the bi-national markets were going functioning normally.
