Economist alerts to the dark side of easy Chinese borrowing

Economist Miguel Collado Di Franco of the Regional Center of Sustainable Economic Strategies (Centro Regional de Estrategias Economicas Sostenibles – CREES) economic research center said the Dominican government should study well the experiences of Ecuador, Kenya and Sri Lanka, who have borrowed from China. Major infrastructure works in Ecuador built with Chinese funds have been vulnerable to overruns and corruption.

The Dominican Republic and China are finalizing details for a US$600 million loan for electricity transmission with the Export-Import Bank of China (Exim) following the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2018.
