Dominicans will be voting for their next mayor on Sunday, 16 February 2020. The poll will be a pilot test on voting, preparing Dominicans to vote in the presidential and congressional elections in May 2020. Politicians are competing for 3,849 municipal government positions, including 158 mayors. Municipal wins require a simple majority.
The JCE says the voting equipment is being installed in the polling places on Friday and Saturday. Most voting stations are in schools and social clubs. The Military Electoral Police will have 64,000 agents on duty primarily stationed at the polling places.
Voting stations will be open for the municipal election from 7am to 5pm nationwide. Voters are not allowed to enter with mobile phones, firearms or any kind of weapon, backpacks, handbags or cameras.
There are two ways of voting: electronic voting and traditional manual voting. Overall, 4,644,590 voters will be using the automated voting machines and 2,842,450 are assigned to voting using printed ballots.
Thursday, 13 February is the last day for active campaigning.
