Juan Sebastian Elcano tall ship visits Santo Domingo

The Spanish Navy midshipmen training tall ship, Juan Sebastian Elcano, is docked in Santo Domingo open for visits by the general public from Monday, 2 March to Thursday, 5 March 2020. The visit is part of the annual officer six-month training tour that will end when the ship returns on 3 November to Cadiz, Spain. The ship is under the command of Captain Santiago de Colsa.

The ship is docked at the Port of Sans Soucí, in eastern Santo Domingo. The ship was received on Sunday, 1 March 2020 by Navy officers and the Spanish Ambassador Alejandro Abellán.

The Juan Sebastián Elcano is a four-mast topsail schooner with a hull made of iron. It has a crew of 220 members. This ship is on its “500th Anniversary of the First Circumnavigation of the Earth,” an expedition initiated by Ferdinand Magellan. The ship is named in honor of the Spanish explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano who completed the circumnavigation of the world after Magellan’s death.

During the five days that the Juan Sebastian de Elcano is anchored in the port of San Souci it will be open to the public on 2 and 5 March, from 4 pm to 7 pm. On the 4th and 5th of March there will also be additional visiting hours from 10 am to 1 pm. The departure of the ship is scheduled for Friday, 6 March at about 4:30 pm.

The tour this year is taking the Royal Navy ship to visit the ports in Las Palmas, Spain; Rio de Janeiro and Recife in Brazil; Buenos Aires and Mar de Plata, Argentina; Montevideo in Uruguay; Curaçao; Santo Domingo and Miami, USA before returning to Cadiz on 18 April 2020.
