Barahona gets a cultural center

The Ministry of Culture has inaugurated the Maria Montez Cultural Center in Barahona city. The center is dedicated to honor Maria Montez, who back in the 1930s and 40s became a famous Hollywood star. She was a native of Barahona. Speaking during the short inauguration ceremony, Culture Minister Eduardo Selman explained that Africa Gracia Vidal (Maria Montez) is an icon of world cinema of whom Dominicans should be very proud. She was born in Barahona.

Selman said the new cultural center carries her name in tribute to her accomplishments. He explained the new center will be dedicated to the youth of Barahona and will be a place where they can receive courses in cinema, theater, music, dance and the plastic arts.

The Maria Montez Cultural Center is located on Jaime Mota Street, almost on the corner of Padre Billini in the center of this city. Angel González was named the director of the center.
