According to Coronavirus Bulletin #117 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 46,305 confirmed cases, including 799 new cases. The number of PCR tests reported for the bulletin is 2,101.
The tally of deaths is now 910, including 7 new registered deaths. The daily average number of deaths for the past 14 days is down to 11.6.
As of Bulletin #117, 3,451 patients are hospitalized. Of these, 238 patients are in intensive care units. Covid-19 hospitalization capacity is stretched, and the government says more units will be available at public hospitals to meet the new demand.
The fatality rate, the number of reported deaths per number of confirmed cases, continues to decline with the increase in testing. It is now at 1.97% per million inhabitants. The positivity rate over the past four weeks has risen to 26.81%, considered high. A high positivity rate means many may be spreading the disease without knowing it. World experts advocate opening the economy when the positivity rate is at 5%.

The average testing over the past 14 days is 3,110 PCR tests. The statistical reports do not include rapid response blood antibody tests or patients diagnosed with tomography or other means. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.
As of Monday, 13 July 2020 at 4pm, the most confirmed cases continue to be reported in urban areas where most of the tests are carried out. Santo Domingo province (12,608) and the National District (12,610) have 55.4% of cases or 25,218 of 45,506 confirmed cases nationwide. Santiago (3,629), San Cristobal (2,313), La Vega (1,644), La Altagracia (1,238), La Romana (1,104), Duarte (1,047), Espaillat (974), Azua (887), Puerto Plata (709), Barahona (670) and Sánchez Ramírez (514) are other provinces that have 500 or more accumulated cases.
The most new cases or recently allocated cases are reported for the 13 July update deadline are: the National District (196), Santo Domingo province (118), Samaná (80), Santiago (64), El Seibo (33), Sánchez Ramírez (22), San Cristóbal (20), San Juan de la Maguana (16), La Altagracia (14), La Romana (14) and Monte Plata (11). The Ministry of Public Health reports 10 or less confirmed cases in 21 other provinces.
The number of recorded cases is dependent on the availability of PCR tests that continues to be very scarce, especially in the provinces where test waiting lists are long.
Haiti reports 6,727 confirmed cases and 141 deaths, as of 12 July 2020.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 12th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Peru, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Panama and Bolivia.
