As of now, the incoming Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) has taken the Presidency and a majority in both houses of Congress. The opposition party will control the Senate with a comfortable majority with 18 of the 32 seats.
The Central Electoral Board (JCE) announced this weekend that the PRM will have a simple majority in the Chamber of Deputies with 90 of the 170 seats. The out-going Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) managed to hold onto 75 seats. The former powerhouse Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) won 7 seats, and former President Leonel Fernandez’ new People’s Force (FP) party managed to garner 4 seats. There are 14 seats scattered among the minority political organizations.
Among the winners in the Chamber of Deputies are two close relatives of former Presidents. These are Orlando Jorge Villegas, son of PRM delegate to the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Orlando Jorge Mera, and grandson of former President Salvador Jorge Mera. He obtained the seat in District #1 of the National District. Omar Leonel Fernández, son of former President Leonel Fernández, won another seat in the District #1 of the National District. He won for the People’s Force (FP), the new party his father founded when splitting from the ruling Dominican Liberation Party after differences in the outcome of the PLD primary in October 2019.
The current speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Radhames Camacho of the PLD, managed to obtain a seat as a National Deputy.
The PRM was allocated all the seats for Dominican communities abroad.
