
The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) that is majority in the Chamber of Deputies will have the opportunity to do things differently from day one.
One of the high profile cases that will need to be tackled is the replacing of deceased deputy Zaida Polanco, who died after being infected with Covid-19 caught during the intense political campaign days.
The 2015 Constitution establishes that the political party she represents needs to present a list of three and then the deputies need to vote on one of these three. Over the past years, the tradition in Congress has been for the position to be awarded to a close relative of the diseased legislator – wife, offspring. Will this practice continue? The Chamber of Deputies resumes as of 16 August 2020. The PRM has 30 days to present its list of possible replacements for the late deputy.
