Celebrating 60 years of USAID in Dominican Republic

President Luis Abinader joins US Embassy for 60th anniversary of the the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the Dominican Republic. The event was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Santo Domingo.

Since 1962, the USAID has contributed almost US$2 billion in aid to the Dominican Republic. US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Robert Thomas and US Aid director, Rebecca Latorraca hosted the event for the US Embassy held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Santo Domingo.

President Luis Abinader stated: “USAID has been key to strengthening transparency in governance, and has also contributed significantly in guiding a comprehensive reform of the National Police in order to achieve greater citizen security,” he said.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in the country, Robert Thomas, said that through USAID they have contributed more than US$1.9 billion to support Dominicans in critical areas such as education, citizen security, climate change and human rights.

“Last year, as a clear testament to our shared goals and continued collaboration, President Abinader and I signed a five-year, US$251 million agreement to implement programs that will contribute to the development of a secure, prosperous and democratic Dominican Republic in three pillars: citizen security and the fight against corruption, climate change adaptation, and assistance to vulnerable people and protection of rights,” Thomas said.

In her remarks, USAID director in the DR, Rebecca Latorraca highlighted the important support provided by the US Government to the transformation of the judiciary. Former Supreme Court of Justice president, Jorge Subero Isa also spoke at the event.

The Dominican Republic was one of the first countries to receive an USAID mission, on 11 January 1962, when it signed its first bilateral agreement to promote socioeconomic development.

The reception, held at the Intercontinental Hotel, was also attended by the presidents of the Senate, Eduardo Estrella; the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco; the Constitutional Court (CT), Milton Ray Guevara; the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Ygnacio Camacho; the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Román Jáquez Liranzo; the Minister of Interior and Police, Jesús Vásquez and the director of the National Police, Eduardo Alberto Then.
