World Health Organization recognizes DR handling of the pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) has invited President of the Luis Abinader to speak at the opening ceremony of the World Health Assembly. The assembly will be from 22 to 28 May 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland. The World Health Assembly is the highest body of the WHO and is attended by representatives of the 194 member states. This year’s focus will be on the end of the COVID-19 pandemic and preparation for the next pandemic.

President Abinader has not announced whether he will accept the invitation. “I would be pleased and honored if you could attend and address the assembly at the high-level welcoming session, which will take place on Sunday, 22 May at 2pm,” says the organization’s secretary general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom, in the invitation letter.

In the letter received at the Dominican Presidency on 27 April 2022, Adhanom writes that he “greatly appreciates your continued support for WHO and your leadership in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Previously, the UN Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, Zurab Pololikashvili had remarked in similar terms on the successful local handling of the pandemic. Pololikashvili commented the Dominican Republic is an example to the world of how to manage tourism responsibly in a critical situation such as that created by the pandemic.
