
The outstanding soprano Ivonne Haza, known as “La Diva Dominicana,” passed away on Thursday, 16 June 2022. She was 83 years old. She was the mother of the Industry and Commerce Minister Víctor (Ito) Bisonó.
Haza is regarded as one of the most important lyric singers in the Dominican Republic of all times. Born in San Pedro de Macorís, she studied music in Santo Domingo and at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, Italy.
She was director of the National Theater from 1982 to 1987.
She is also remembered for her significant contributions in educating hundreds of classic singers in the Dominican Republic at the National Music Conservatory.
She was director of lyric singers at Bellas Artes and in 2016 received the “Acroarte al Mérito Periodístico” Award given by the Asociación de Cronistas de Arte.
She received the Dominican Republic’s official decoration of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella and Italy’s Order of Merit.
