On better days, the market had meant sales of RD$70 to RD$80 million on Monday and Friday market days. On those days, the border is open for Haitians to enter and depart without any paperwork or identification papers.
As reported in Diario Libre, the president of the Association of Retailers of the Dajabón Market, Abigaíl Bueno, says that sales are down 50%. Lately, the market has plummeted given Haiti’s economic and internal situations,” said Bueno.
A report in Diario Libre focuses on the significant decline in sales at the Dajabón bi-national market on the border with Haiti. The main reason is that the Haitian government charges what Haitians consider to be abusive import taxes on goods bought in the Dominican Republic. Diario Libre says the appreciation of the Dominican peso to the US dollar has not helped.
