Korea Airports Corporation to consult on future Pedernales International Airport

Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) signed on 04 October 2022 a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dominican Republic’s Airport Authority to collaborate on the construction of the Pedernales International Airport. The agreement was signed during the visit of Victor Pichardo, director of the DR Airport Authority to South Korea to participate in Dominican Week.

The airport is planned for Los Tres Charcos in the Cabo Rojo area, an area where efforts are underway to kickstart the construction of a first phase of around 5,000 hotel rooms.

The announcement came during the visit of Victor Pichardo to South Korea to participate in the First Dominican Week in Korea organized by the Dominican Embassy in Korea. Dominican Ambassador to Korea, Federico Cuello and his staff have organized the first Dominican Week in Korea. The announcement of Korea Airport Corporation collaboration follows on the strengthening of business ties between both countries.

“Regarding the Pedernales airport project, it is completing its assessment process and will then go to bidding, as established by law, so it is important to learn about the best practices and technologies implemented by airport operators worldwide,” said Pichardo to motivate the signing of the agreement with the Korean experts.

The Airport Department and the Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) have agreed to establish a cooperation and exchange mechanism to strengthen Dominican airport operations.

The agreement was signed by Victor Pichardo, executive director of the DA, and Hyeung-Jung YOON, president and CEO of KAC, in a meeting held at the headquarters of the Korean Airport Corporation in Seoul, capital of South Korea.

“Whenever we can establish cooperation, to continue improving the capabilities of our Dominican airport personnel, we will do so, as we have already done, the authorities of AENA, in Spain, in Muninch, Germany, among others,” said Pichardo.

The Dominican Embassy in Korea also is promoting the signing of a free trade agreement with Korea. Korea since 2021 has a FTA with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panamá, Honduras and Nicaragua.
