Fernando Hazoury, chairman of the board of Cap Cana Group, used the platform of Fitur International Travel Fair in Madrid, Spain to announce the start of operations of the first Sports Illustrated Resort Marina & Villas Cap Cana in the Punta Cana eastern beach area. The Cap Cana venture is the first Sports Illustrated branded resort worldwide.
Hazoury spoke accompanied by Tourism Minister David Collado and Experiential Ventures executive Chris Schroeder and Mark Korros, experts in marketing global brands. Experiential Ventures is a team of hospitality, food & beverage, branding, retail, design, entertainment and real estate leaders who have worked with some of the most iconic brands in the world.
Hazoury said that the digital experience of Sports Illustrated Resort and the media power of its Sports Illustrated magazine, an icon in American sports culture for over 65 years, has shaped the narrative around sports. He said the magazine has a reach of 70 million consumers with the cover of the magazine being the most coveted commodity in sports media and one of the most recognizable honors in American culture, which is the largest source of tourists to the Dominican Republic.
The 150-room hotel is the rebranding of the Ancora Cap Cana at Fishing Lodge Boulevard, north of the Cap Cana Marina. Around US$3 million was invested in the hotel renovation and rebranding. The Sports Illustrated spokesmen indicated that after evaluating multiple locations, the Dominican Republic and Cap Cana seemed to be the ideal place to launch this iconic brand.
The resort opened to the general public on 15 December 2022. Eleven resorts and hotels now operate in the Cap Cana area.
