Ralph Gonsalves to head CELAC; recalling Gonsalves’s anti-DR positions

Amidst talk of democracy and calls for aid for Haiti at the 7th Latin American and Caribbean Summit, the attending heads of government elected Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Ralph Gonsalves to occupy the rotating presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in 2023.

Ralph Gonsalves is the longest-standing regional head of government. He is in his fifth term as head of state in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. His son is minister of Finance in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The southern Caribbean nation becomes the first CARICOM country to occupy the presidency.

In 2014, the Dominican Republic desisted from participating in Caricom activities after Gonsalves took a strong stand against the country regarding Haitian migration issues and the sovereignty of the Dominican Republic.
