As of 12 December 2023, the public hospital network (SNS) had reported 10,854 deliveries, of which 10,838 were live births, according to a story in Listin Diario. Most of the births were in Greater Santo Domingo and to mothers between the ages of 20 and 29 years.
Of the total births, 36.1% were to Haitian mothers and 0.2% to other nationalities.
As of 12 December, the public hospital network reported 10,854 deliveries in its facilities, of which 10,838 were registered as live births.
Of the live births, 4,242 were registered in the Metropolitan Health Region, 1,222 in hospitals in the National District, especially the Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia Maternity Hospital with 1,039 reported.
In the hospitals of the province of Santo Domingo, 2,887 births were registered, of which 821 occurred at the San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternity Hospital and 1,114 at the Dr. Reynaldo Almánzar Maternity Hospital.
According to data from the Repository of Information and Statistics of Health Services of the SNS, during this period, there were 39 births to mothers under 15 years of age, over 2,000 to those between 15 and 19 years of age, over 3,500 to women between 20 and 24 years of age; some 2,600 births to mothers between 25 and 29 years of age; over 1,600 to those between 30 and 34 years of age; over 700 between 35 and 39 years of age; 177 to those between 40 and 44 years of age and 13 to those over 45 years of age.
Of the births in public network hospitals last year, 6,021 were delivered vaginally, for 55.47% of the total registered, while 4,833 were by cesarean section, for 44.53% of the total.
During 2022, as of 10 December, the National Epidemiology Agency of the Ministry of Public Health recorded 162 maternal deaths, the ages of the cases range from 15 to 44 years, with a median age of 28 years.
Eighty-five percent of the deaths occurred during pregnancy and 51% of the deaths occurred in Santo Domingo, Santiago and San Cristóbal.
In addition, 724 of the births were premature, 963 were low birth weight and 18 were born with some malformation, representing percentages ranging from 8.89%, 6.68% and 0.17%, respectively.
