
Italy, Latvia, Canada, Serbia, Slovenia, Germany, Lithuania and the United States moved to the semi-finals of the FIBA World Cup. Defending champion Spain didn’t make it.
The DR lost in the second round to Puerto Rico 102-97. In that game, Towns showcased all his NBA All-Star skills, and finished with 39 points (on 13-for-27 shootings), 10 rebounds and two blocks.
In Group A, the DR lost 112 to 79 to Serbia. Italy blasted Puerto Rico and made the finals defeating Serbia 78-76. Italy defeated Puerto Rico 73-57.
Italy, had received an awakening blow when the DR pulled in a surprise win in the first round 87-82, and then got their act together and defeated Serbia and Puerto Rico to show they are a strong contender for the World Cup.
The media reports it is the first time in 25 years that Italy goes to the quarterfinals of the FIBA Basketball World Cup. It is a first time for Latvia.
Lester Quiñones said that a positive outcome of the Dominican participation in FIBA 2023 World Cup is that the country is now recognized as a basketball-contending nation. “Dominican Republic, from the bottom of my heart, I want to let you know that I love you, and the support you have given me throughout this journey.
