In baseball, those watching Elly De la Cruz continuee to marvel at the accomplishments of this 21-year old. Last week he again prevented a runner from scoring as he threw a 99.7 mph strike to the catcher for the out. This was surpassed a few weeks ago by a 99.8 mph throw that effectively did the same thing: prevent a run from scoring. But that is sort of “ho-hum” for the rookie who entered Major League baseball in June. But look at this from Cincinnati, WKRC radio: Cincinnati Reds rookie Elly De La Cruz continues to re-write the MLB record book, erasing a milestone achievement over 100 years old.
The 21-year-old on Wednesday, 30 August knocked in a career-high six runs in a 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. According to Bally Sports Cincinnati, it’s the fewest career games needed for a player to collect six RBI in a game since at least 1901. He hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and then in the seventh inning EDLC hit a bases-loaded triple to the right-field corner.
But that was not all. Another Dominican rookie, Jasson Dominguez also got his name in the record books at his very first at-bat in a Major League game, with the New York Yankees and against a 3-time Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander, no less. This is what Major League Baseball (MLB) posted about his first turn at bat. Dominguez arrived in the big leagues sporting a boyish grin and tailed by impossible hype, already compared to some of the sport’s greatest outfielders before setting foot in the batter’s box. It took all of one swing to show why expectations are so high.
“The Martian” homered on his first swing in a Major League game, blasting an opposite-field two-run homer off likely future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. Domínguez’s first-inning blast was one of four dingers that the Yankees hit off Verlander, powering a 6-2 victory over the Astros on Friday night at Minute Maid Park. And he is only 20 years, 206 days old. Another record.
