Dajabon border continues closed; authorities await action regarding construction of irrigation canal

The Ministry of Defense has reinforced patrols and surveillance on the border in the Dajabón area and the passing of civilians across the border gate with Haiti in Dajabón is not allowed. The closing of the border has affected Haitians that would have been deported and transporters of merchandise from the Dominican side to Haiti.

N Digital reports after the closure of the border of the Dominican Republic with Haiti in the Dajabón province, President Luis Abinader explained on Wednesday, 6 September 2023 that the opening of the border will depend on the results of ongoing talks.

The government seeks to halt the digging of a canal to divert water from the Massacre River to Haiti, and to capture the Haitians who participated in the quadruple homicide of the same family in Dajabón.

By order of the Dominican Government, the authorities proceeded on Wednesday, 6 September 2023 to close the border between the DR and Haiti.

Before, Foreign Minister, Roberto Álvarez had suggested that it is necessary to “effectively close the border” and regularize Haitians who are in the country irregularly working in companies, agro-industries and construction to apply the “80-20” in hiring workers.

Alvarez had said both measures are possible “although some people believe that it is not possible, but for this it is necessary not only strong penalties, but also to have a biometric record of everyone who is in the territory and that is being done.”
