Haiti continues to stop trade

Authorities in Haiti demand an end to the requirement for biometric registration of undocumented nationals before entering the Dominican Republic. As a result, the gates for Dominican products to enter Haiti are closed on the Haitian side. President Luis Abinader has said the new requirement is not negotiable. Most people in Haiti do not have legal identification and biometric registration is a start for these people to have a legal ID.

Moreover, to discourage Haitians from sourcing goods in the Dominican Republic, Haitian border authorities have been vandalizing the goods purchased by Haitians who enter the Dominican Republic by legal or unauthorized border crossings.

Now, the Haitian border authorities state they will fine nationals found introducing goods from the Dominican Republic. The authorities say the goods seized will be destroyed, sold or auctioned.
