Conep calls for changes in how progress is assessed

President Luis Abinader was present for the opening of the 10th National Business Council (Conep) Convention. President Abinader called for private and public sectors to put differences aside and work for common goals.

Conep is the most important business organization. During the event, Conep published a short list of objectives. Conep acknowledges the sustained extraordinary economic development over the past five decades given the environment stability and trust. But the business council calls for looking beyond growth of GDP and for the nation to adopt new metrics to calculate progress in terms of quality of life and welfare of those living in the country.

Celso Juan Marranzini, president of Conep alerted: “In recent years there has been a growing trend in our productivity, but structural flaws are evident that slow down our performance.” Conep called for the passing of amendments to draft a tax system that is pro-growth and that promotes jobs, investment and efficient spending in government.

The Conep challenges the private and public sector to take action to advance ten positions on the Global Competitiveness Index in the next four years.
