54-year old Carolina Mejia has an aggressive participation in social media as she reaches out to young people to vote for her. She is running on the high profile improvements in the construction of parks with support of big business and relatively efficient garbage collection. Her administration has been a strong supporter of construction of high rises and residential property in the central Poligono Central area of the capital city.
Her administration team was a strong supporter of the construction of a love motel on the west side of the Malecon smack in the middle of a residential area. As the elections got near, the city government acknowledged the permission had been wrongfully granted and removed support from the project and it was stopped despite being in an advanced state of construction. The case continues in the Superior Administrative Court.
Mejia is now seeking reelection. She was registered for mayor on the deadline after the party determined she was the best candidate. She is also secretary general of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
She is running with Stalin Alcantara as vice mayor. Mejia is the daughter of former President Hipolito Mejia.
