President Abinader in NY for UN Security Council

President Luis Abinader is in New York to participate in the UN Security Council on Tuesday, 13 February 2024. The President said he will once again address the situation in Haiti. Abinader also hopes to return with a date for the Kenya police support effort in Haiti. The Kenya government is asking for US$225 million to carry out the operation. Meanwhile, a court in Kenya declared the operation illegal and in violation of the Constitution.

Last October 2023, after the insistence of the Ariel Henry government in Haiti and after statements made by US President Joe Biden at the UN General Assembly, the Security Council approved sending a peacekeeping force to Haiti. Kenya, with about a thousand soldiers, agreed to command the mission with the support of other countries.

However, five months after the announcement, the date has not been established. “We don’t have the date; perhaps now, with this trip we can have some information,” Abinader said during his Monday press conference, before leaving for New York.

In Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry had been scheduled to leave power on 7 February 2024, with a new president named by then. This did not happen.
