Ulises Rodriguez on his city government for Santiago

The winner of the Santiago city elections, Ulises Rodriguez of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) says he will transform Santiago into an innovative and competitive city. Before he ran for mayor, Rodriguez served as director of the ProIndustria agency in the Abinader administration.

Santiago is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. The city is already a mecca for free zone export manufacturing, including cigars, and for medical tourism. It is well known for its restaurants and cultural activities.

In the 18 February 2024 vote, Ulises Rodriguez received 61.63% of the vote. He upset Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate, deputy Victor Fadul.

Rodriguez’s victory is more significant because the incumbent mayor of Santiago Abel Martinez seeks to be elected President of the Republic in the 19 May 2024 presidential elections, running on the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) ticket with the backing of two-term former President Danilo Medina.

Rodriguez promises his administration will be transparent and open.

“Assuming responsibility as mayor is a commitment that I take with great responsibility,” said the PRM leader.

During his victory speech, the mayor-elect guaranteed that he will carry out each project he proposed during the electoral campaign.

He has promised to improve public markets, clean up the Yaque del Norte River and improve traffic. He also promises to improve the working conditions of the firefighters.

Overall, PRM candidates won 13 of the 15 municipalities in Santiago.
