It’s turtle time!

The Ministry of the Environment’s Coastal and Marine Resources Department says leatherback turtles have been sighted here along the eastern coast from Miches south to the Punta Cana beach areas. From March until September, the sea creatures come to the beaches along the eastern shores of the Dominican Republic to lay their eggs.

The great sea creatures come to many of the beaches in the Dominican Republic to lay their eggs, and these nests have oftentimes been ravaged by locals to supplement their diets.

Nowadays, there is a growing awareness regarding the value of these animals, both ecologically as well as environmentally.

And this is to say nothing of the impact on eco-tourism as thousands gather to watch over the nests and witness the spawning of the baby turtles as they make their way back to the sea.

The official proclamation by the Ministry of Environment was held at the Costa Arrecife hotel near the La Vacama Beach in Nisibon.

The Ministry, through its Leatherback Protection Program has established a permanent patrol of about 40 of the 50 kilometers of beaches in the eastern province of La Altagracia. La Altagracia province coastal waters cover the Caribbean Sea until merging into the Atlantic Ocean.
