Tragic death of Barahona senator’s son; Senate suspends sessions

19-year old Jose Manuel del Castillo Vanderlinde, son of the senator for Barahona Jose del Castillo, was reported dead on Tuesday, 2 April 2024. El Nacional reported that it had preliminary information the man would have committed suicide, jumping from a fourth-floor apartment.

What is officially known is Del Castillo Vanderlinde was reported dead in the morning of Tuesday when he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Santo Domingo. The family has not given details.

The Senate closed its sessions for this week in solidarity with the Barahona senator. Senator Del Castillo seeks to be reelected in the 19 May 2024 congressional election.

The death announcement coincided with another tragedy affecting a Dominican congressman. Alfredo Pacheco, president of the Chamber of Deputies on the same day confirmed his 34-year old son Luis Alfredo Pacheco Rojas had died in Houston, Texas. The Chamber of Deputies also called off sessions for the week in solidarity.
