16-year old Edwin de Jesus Arias became the 10th victim of the Salcedo Carnival fireworks tragedy. An adult and eight other children have died due to the imprudent handling of fireworks by one of the carnival troupe members for the Salcedo Carnival on Sunday, 10 March 2024.
The Salcedo Carnival was called off and the National Carnival Parade was also suspended in solidarity with the victims. The people of Salcedo learned the hard way why Dominican law establishes that only professional outfits can handle fireworks.
Diario Libre reports that Arias was an A student in 11th grade in the Colegio Salome Ureña of Salcedo. He was cared for at the burn unit at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo for 26 days. He suffered third-degree burns over 65% of his body.
Of the survivors of the fireworks fires, one child was airlifted to the Boston Shriner’s Hospital burn unit, with chances of surviving.
