16,000 Haitians estimated to have entered on 8 April 2024 market day

Around 16,000 Haitians queued to enter the Dominican Republic to buy goods at the Dajabon Binational market on Monday, 8 April 2024, reports Diario Libre. Lines for entry usually vary from 16,000 to 35,000 Haitians for the Monday and Friday market days when the border gates between Haiti and the DR open for foot traffic.

On market days, undocumented Haitians are allowed to enter. There are no checks on who enters or leaves. Diario Libre reports the Haitians entered on 16 April in an organized manner. The military on the Dominican side organizes the queues in lines for women and men.

It is not clear if the government-announced requirement of biometric registration is being applied.

In contrast, EFE news agency reports on the detaining for return of around 300 Haitian boat people in the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos Islands.
