Haitian authorities report of regained control of largest hospital in Haiti; Wrap up of education efforts and more in Haiti

Authorities in Port-au-Prince, Haiti have reported that the government has regained control over what is said to be the largest hospital in Haiti. The facility had been under the control of the gangs that, until recently, controlled much of the territory in Haiti.

As reported, the arrival of police forces from Kenya, preceded by support from the US military, have bolstered the local units of police and several of the gangs have either fled or have been eliminated, and their grasp of control has weakened.

The media reports that these are hospital facilities that have been sacked and vandalized to a major extent during the four months it was controlled by the gangs.

Shortly after the arrival of the security forces from Kenya, and the looming arrival of more agents from Jamaica, the leaders of most of the gangs recently signed a peace deal between themselves to present a common front against the United Nations mission.

Likewise, a recent visit by UN educators has revealed that over 900 of the schools in that nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and the area south of the Artibonito River are closed or just useless, since they have neither chairs, desks, or even rudimentary blackboards.

Overall, the United Nations mission estimated that at least US$23 million are urgently needed to get the educational system back on its feet. Many of the schools are being used as shelter by homeless families. Many Haitian teachers were able to migrate to the US taking advantage of migration facilities, worsening the situation in Haiti. Dominican public schools have registered around 200,000 Haitian students. Border schools have large populations of Creole-speaking Haitian children.
