Ministry of Public Health extends hours of mental health call center

Local health authorities have announced that the “Cuida tu Salud Mental” hotline will extend its hours of operation starting 1 September 2024. The hotline, which provides mental health support, will then be available from 8am to 12am, seven days a week. Minister of Public Health Victor Atallah made the announcement together with First Lady Raquel Arbaje.

The hotline number is 809 200-1400. Specially-trained psychologists provide the attention.

The Ministry of Public Health explains the department is updating and creating new protocols for managing various mental health conditions, including depression in adults, substance abuse in children and adolescents, and autism spectrum disorder.

These protocols are being developed by technical committees composed of experts from diverse institutions.

Additionally, the Ministry explains it is working to modernize the National Mental Health Plan and the Mental Health Law 12-06. This effort is being carried out in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and other organizations to ensure that the country’s mental health policies and regulations align with international best practices and the specific needs of the Dominican population.

To address the issue of suicide, the Ministry of Public Health is developing strategic guidelines for prevention at the local level, including provincial, municipal, and health district offices. These guidelines are being reviewed by technical committees and specialized consultants to ensure the implementation of effective prevention strategies.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Health is developing a mental health bulletin and conducting a study to characterize the homeless population. These initiatives aim to provide up-to-date information to guide decision-making and the implementation of appropriate interventions.
